Celebrate the birth of our nation in style. All this week we’ll feature a variety of posts to help make your 4th of July a celebration to remember.

Up first … appetizers. From savory to sweet, here are some ideas we found around the web and our own recipe boxes to get your party started right.

1. True blue fruit tray: Looking for something super easy? This tray’s for you. Place blueberries in a a square bowl in one corner of a fairly large, rectangle tray. Arrange slices of strawberries and watermelon alternately with slices or cubes of a white cheese like feta for the perfect combination of sweet and savory.

2. Watermelon blueberry salsa: Punch up traditional salsa with the addition of watermelon and blueberries. The love and oil blog provides easy directions: Dice tomatoes, jalapenos (seeds removed), an onion and combine with diced watermelon and whole blueberries. Add salt, lime juice and fresh cilantro and voila! Serve with both white and blue corn tortilla chips.

3. Skewer stars: Roast small, halved blue potatoes under a broiler until very crisp on the outside, turning every so often to be sure the potatoes are cooked through. Let cool completely, then pull them onto skewers alternating with sweet grape tomatoes, fresh basil leaves and pearls of mozzarella cheese for a full-on red, white and blue effect. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

4. Chex Mix gets even more American – Combine the traditional goodness of Chex Mix with red and blue chocolate candies by following this easy recipe from the folks at tablespoon.com. The added touch of white almond bark – with the chocolate pieces – balances out the savory crunch of the cereal and pretzels.
